
In 1866, a Russian scientist named Alexander Saytzeff isolated an organosulfur compound that was given the chemical name of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) that languished as a forgotten discovery for decades, except for its usefulness as an industrial solvent. That began to change after the end of World War II when chemists began to notice that DMSO could dissolve almost anything and carry it in solution.
