NewsGuard is positioning itself to become the self-appointed judge and gatekeeper of online content, especially vital information related to our health. Its financial backers include a 92-year-old global communications company called Publicis Groupe, plus Google and Microsoft.
Piggybacking onto the fact-checking business models of Snopes and Web of Trust, NewsGuard is designing a system that will rate online news brands based on its proprietary and arbitrary definition of trustworthiness and transparency, supposedly to help readers differentiate between reliable information and propaganda (aka Fake News). The conduit for the NewsGuard system will be a browser plugin. Once installed on one of your electronic devices, the NewsGuard icon rating will appear on all your Bing and Google searches and on articles that are featured in your social media news feeds. The NewsGuard rating system will influence Internet searches conducted at schools and public libraries. While NewGuard is initially designing its rating system for U.S.-based media brands, the company intends to deploy it globally.
Five different color-codes will be used in NewsGuard’s rating system:
Green: Follows basic standards of accuracy and accountability
Red: Does not meet NewsGuard’s criteria for credibility and transparency
Orange: Considered a satirical or humorous site that simulates real news
Blue: Site that primarily hosts user-generated content
Gray: Site is unrated
These color codes are meant to discourage readers from accessing websites that, in NewsGuard’s view, do not meet their standard for full disclosure and credibility. Only green-coded sites will be likely candidates to appear in online search results.
NewsGuard claims a Rule 506(b) exemption that allows the company to raise an unlimited amount of money from an unlimited number of accredited investors. As the primary startup funding source for NewsGuard, Publicis Groupe has attracted a notable client list that includes cigarette companies and major drug manufacturers such as Lilly, Abbott, Roche, Amgen, Genentech, Celgene, and Bayer. These companies are poised to capitalize on their financial backing of NewsGuard to skew the rating system so that their corporate interests and mainstream viewpoints shape public opinion and government policy. Meanwhile, social media giants such as Facebook, Twitter, and Google are likely to use the NewsGuard ratings to suppress any nonconformist content from appearing in their feeds.
