A customer recently asked whether taking MSM (organic sulfur) can lead to bone loss. Below is my written response to her inquiry.
Methylsulfonylmethane, often abbreviated as MSM, is an organic sulfur compound that is the third largest nutrient found in the human body. Sulfur enables our bodies to manufacture the master antioxidant known as glutathione, which cannot perform its detoxification functions effectively without it. Invaluable as a nutrient that breaks up harmful calcium deposits that are the root cause of many degenerative diseases, MSM enhances bone health, providing relief from painful conditions such as arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and osteoarthritis. As stated on Dr. Axe’s article entitled, “MSM Supplement Improves Joints, Allergies and Gut Health:”
MSM supplements are beneficial for helping the body form new joint and muscle tissue while lowering inflammatory responses that contribute to swelling and stiffness.
Two members of the vitamin B complex that contain sulfur are thiamine (B1) and biotin (B7). Occurring billions of times every second in our cells, the Methylation Cycle is a biochemical process and pathway involving the vitamin B complex that contributes to a diverse set of essential bodily functions, such as detoxification and inflammation management. Known as the beauty mineral, the sulfur in MSM provides collagen and keratin that are essential to grow and maintain healthy hair and nails. By taking organic sulfur, we can help our bodies repair damaged cells – including those directly related to our bones – and manufacture new cells in a healthy manner.
