MethionineMethionine is a sulfur-containing essential amino acid that your body cannot synthesize – meaning, that it must be obtained from either a food source such as eggs, meat, or nuts or a dietary supplement. Working closely with cysteine, methionine functions as a building block in the synthesis of other proteins such as carnitine, melatonin, and the master antioxidant, glutathione. Endowed with anti-inflammatory properties, methionine reduces the depositing of fat in the liver, strengthens the nails, and works to combat hair loss.

Found in every living cell, sulfur constitutes about 140 grams in the human body, primarily in the form of two sulfur amino acids: methionine and cysteine. These amino acids influence our hemoglobin, hormones, enzymes, and antibodies. They also directly affect production of cartilage. Studies have shown that healthy individuals have about three times more sulfur in their cartilage than arthritis patients. When an arthritis sufferer is also sulfur-deficient, damaged and inflamed tissues tend to take a long time to heal.

Hair and nails contain strands of a tough protein known as keratin that is 6% sulfur. On the other hand, collagen is the main protein found in connective tissue, while cartilage tissues contain proteins with flexible sulfur bonds.

In addition, sulfur is used by the body to dispose of accumulated waste products. As noted in a post on DC Nutrition:

The oxidized form of sulfur is sulfate. Dietary sulfate is poorly absorbed. Instead sulfate is produced in the body primarily by oxidation of the sulfur-containing amino acids.

The liver uses sulfate to process waste materials. It adds sulfate to a variety of foreign compounds and metabolic end products to inactivate them and to increase their water solubility to help flush them out of the body.

When there is a short supply of sulfur in the body, the cell wall hardens and cell membranes become less permeable. When that happens, there is a reduction in the transportation of oxygen and nutrients to the cells, as well as the accumulation of toxic metabolic waste products inside the cells which can lead to reduced energy and degenerative disease.

The cytokine storm (inflammatory surge) that results in hemorrhaging, internal clotting, and catastrophic dehydration that results in the patient’s demise must be addressed. Providing the body with the time it needs to ramp up its immune cells that can attack and destroy the virus is crucial.
